Belgium’s Spa Francorchamps circuit is one of the world’s most challenging and downright fast race tracks, so to win there takes some serious skills. To win over 24 hours, in the rain, takes a bucketload of talent and expertise, so Audi can feel very pleased with themselves after triumphing by two clear laps in the Blancpain Endurance 24 Hours of Spa.

The #33 Audi R8 LMS of Timo Scheider, Greg Franchi and Matthias Ekstrom led the race for 13 hours on their way to victory for Audi Sport Team WRT (Belgian Audi Club) with Scheider taking the chequered flag after 545 laps. They were followed home by the car that won this year’s 24 Hours of Dubai, the #76 Team Need for Speed Schubert BMW Z4m driven by Dirk Werner, Claudia Huertgen and Edward Sandstroem. It was an especially impressive result for Team Need for Speed, after the car started 49th on the 62-car grid.

The race saw plenty of local interest too, with UAE GT Championship driver Phil Quaife, who brought home McLaren’s new MP4-12C GT3 car home in 25th place overall and 11th in the Pro-Am class alongside Adam Christodoulou, Glynn Geddie and Roger Wills. It was the first outing for the new McLaren racer, and the #60 Von Ryan Racing entry was the only car of three from Woking to finish.

Dubai’s Karim Al Azhari was also racing in Belgium alongside his UAE GT teammate Fabien Giroix, Frederic Fatien and Andrea Barlesi in the #45 Lamborghini Gallardo. Sadly the car was forced into retirement after 136 laps with a broken clutch.
