The evening ends with a high-speed taxi ride alongside Klaus, affording me a comparison to my own driving ability to that of the best Affalterbach has to offer. Needless to say, I still have a fair bit of improvement to make to reach the dizzying heights of an Official AMG Fahrer. Klaus makes everything look annoyingly easy, with his expert grasp of just how the car will react to his input. He’s simultaneously smoother and more aggressive than me, pushing the CLS far harder. The braking, the cornering, the lines; all are polished and precise compared to my ham-fisted attempts.
The price tag for the AMG Driving Academy Advanced Course is a steep one, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit let down that there was no one-on-one tuition for the money. But that said, I did learn things. By the end of the day, my inputs were smoother and my lines around corners were better. I even learned that for years, I’ve been sitting too far away from the steering wheel with the seat back too reclined. There are five levels within the AMG Driving Academy, and this was the third. If I had the money to buy an AMG car, perhaps I wouldn’t say no to a little extra output for the next step in tuition from the guys that made it. It would seem a shame not to.
