With five different AMG models to choose from, my journalistic colleagues naturally gravitate towards the most performance-orientated machine, the SLS. The SLK may not be as powerful as the SLS but I wanted to use my early laps to familiarise myself with the layout of the track, while building my confidence on braking and turn-in points. Then, hopefully, I would get to enjoy the rare opportunity of driving an SLS on track to my maximum ability, after fine tuning the Schumacher-esque driving skill that I have always known I possess. Ahem.

The first few laps roll by at a leisurely pace, playing follow the leader with attention drawn to the braking points, turning points and visual reference points laid out in differently coloured cones. This may seem like an over simplification and a dumbing down of driver tuition but on my very first corner I am surprised at how late the cone marker is indicating the turn. If I had been left to my own devices I would have initiated the turn much early and no doubt compromised my track position for the following corner.

Follow-the-leader-style track experiences are sometimes criticised by hardened track day veterans, but on the first corner of my first lap I have learned something that could potentially improve my driving skill. Determined to take advantage of this tuition, I find myself listening intently to the voice of Klaus Wagner, the AMG driving instructor for my group, as he imparts his experience over the radio.

Several sessions pass as we alternate drivers and switch between the five models of AMG machinery we have at our disposal. All the while, the pace is quickening and my confidence is building. It is a curious thing to drive such different models within a single manufacturer’s lineup back to back. Each seems a familiar environment after leaving the previous, which only serves to heighten the different driving experience each has to offer.

Much harder application of the brakes is required to scrub off the momentum from its hulking mass before entering the corners. The ever-present traction control has to work overtime as I try to keep up with the others by powering out of the corners with a hefty dose of throttle.
