We hadn’t expected that.

News on the Formula 1 grapevine as of late has concerned a possible hiatus in 2016 for McLaren driver Fernando Alonso, following a poor season for the former two-time World Champion courtesy of the woeful MP4-30. Indeed, the 2015 marked the first time in Alonso’s career that he was outscored by a teammate…

So, where would Alonso end up in 2016? On the sidelines? Back with McLaren? The World Endurance Championship like old mucker Mark Webber? MotoGP?…wait, what…

Images of Alonso taking Honda’s RC213V MotoGP bike for a spin around Motegi will no doubt add fuel to this particular fire. The F1 star’s high-profile run alongside compatriot – and two-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez – formed part of Honda’s annual end of season ‘Thanks Day’, with Marquez at one point saddling up for a few laps in Honda’s new NSX Concept GT. IndyCar winner Takuma Sato was also on-hand to drive Honda’s 1968 RA301 F1 car, while Alonso topped off his day with a few laps aboard Honda’s ’91 MP4/6, as driven by Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger that season.

We await the official video with barely bated breath, but as you can see from the below trackside footage, the F1 champ is clearly not hanging around.
