If you think ‘Mustang’, you can’t help but think ‘power’ and ‘quarter mile’ So what on earth springs to mind when you add ‘Mach 1’ on to the end? ‘Mental’ should just about do it.

Enjoying a short introductory lifecycle (1969-73), power for the Mustang Mach 1 came from a range of V8s: from a lowly 4.9l up to the 7.0l. Power then was pretty hefty. Even the base 4.9l produced 210hp, all of which galloped to 100kph from standstill in a little over six seconds.

Seems even this wasn’t enough to charm buyers though, and the Mustang’s early-1970s slump continued.
