New Class, as names go for a model range, is a pretty good one. And such was the moniker BMW opted for when they released the 1500 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1961.
This particular example though is the later BMW 1602 from 1966, so-named since it was a (that’s right!) two-door saloon. Power came from a 1.8l straight-four which, despite its fairly modest 96hp, was still enough to help keep the 1600 series popular until 1975. In keeping with tradition, the 1602 stuck with rear-wheel drive throughout its lifecycle.
