Last weekend the Red Bull X-Fighters circus rolled into Dubai, ready to stun the hairs on the back of your neck bolt upright with their traditionally epic stunts and high-flying acrobatics.
It would be easy for us to rabbit at length about the night’s events, but since we recently sent members of the crankandpiston collective in our place, we thought you might like to hear what they thought instead. Big hand please for our Red Bull X-Fighters competition winners:
Andy Barty: Competition Winner #1
“I had a great night! I’ve always admired the guys who do this, but only from the comfort of my armchair!
“I had not planned to go to this (until I won the tickets), due to the location and the amount of traffic in the area: the thought of battling my way into JBR made me more intent on catching it all the next day on the crankandpiston Red Bull stream.
“But battle I did. My mate and I parked out in AUD then caught the shuttle bus in. There was still a lot of traffic though, and it took us over 50 minutes to fight our way through the rush. Luckily the 8 p.m. start was delayed, and everything kicked off just as we sat down. Once in the venue it did not disappoint. How those guys do it is beyond me!
“I thought the competition progression was great. Certain tricks were not allowed until later rounds, so this gave us all something different to watch as the night progressed. The cultural display was also fantastic and helped showcase the UAE to the X Fighter world!
“All in all, a worthy trip out to an amazing sport!”
Melody Maz: Competition Winner #2
“The Red Bull X-Fighters was truly exhilarating, very well organized and definitely one of my favourite experiences.
“When we got to JBR, the crowd was massive! There were a lot of families with their kids and so many cheery teenage groups (one of whom we had behind us, tough luck!). The event was delayed by half an hour, but we did not feel the pinch since we were entertained by the energetic MC, the skydivers, various programmes and the videos on the screen with some killer soundtracks being played.
“We loved the different shows put up from the fishermen and their boats – which had a traditional feel to it – to the neon lighted dance group and the vibrant fire starters along with the energetic drummers. And the entrance of the skydivers was amazing!
“The bikers then took a grand entrance wearing Dishdashs, which was truly a sight since they all had their different entrances. My favourite hands down would have to be Danny Torres, since he really got the crowd going. The stunts put up by the bikers were heart clenching and such an adrenaline rush. I was pretty much on the edge of my seat throughout, especially when they did those daring 360 degree flips (now I know why they are called Death Flips) and other top class stunts.
“It was truly a joy seeing all the bikers at their best and I can’t wait to see what next year’s event has in store for us. Awesome night! Thank you C&P” >>>
