A $136,000 prize pot’s likely to get even the best of us salivating. It certainly worked for 62 GCC nationals anyway, the professionals descending en-mass to Abu Dhabi last weekend for the second round of the Yas Marina Pro Drag Racing Series.

For those of you not massively in the know re drag racing, it’s not just the flame spitting single-seaters that rule the roost. Categories range from Pro Mod to Pro 6, Pro Bike to Super Street 8: those are just words, true, but the figures that spew forth aren’t to be shrugged at.

Using just a quarter mile of tarmac, for example, Sultan Al Zaabi’s Pro-Mod winning speed was a hair over 308kph. And if you consider his winning speed from round one back in late-March was 295kph, that lays the perspective nicely. And just FYI, both of these times were achieved in less than 4s.

Short and sweet, the season finale takes place next week. With the 3-double 0 barrier already broken, one wonders what these guys have left up their fire-proof sleeves >>>
