Maserati has a long heritage of racing in a wide variety of championships around the world and added to its tally of victories at the Dubai Autodrome on November 26th 2010.
Robert Cregan drove the number 47 Maserati GranTurismo MC to victory in the GTC class of the Cytech UAE GT Championship. Rob came up against some stiff competition in the form of Ginetta G50 HC driven by Joe Ghanem.
In the end, Rob managed to take victory with a margin of just 2.082secs and collected the trophy from the top step of the podium with a broad smile.
After the race, Robert said ‘The race was pretty tough – I had some tyre problems which made it very hard to keep the car on the track. I was trying to keep the guys behind for a long as I could because Joe was really quick. Luckily for me, Joe got a drive through penalty, so I got past him. Overall, it was a good race and the pit stop went well, so I’m really happy to win again.’
Driving alongside Dave Field in the number 49 Maserati GranTurismo MC for the first time was Phil McGovern. With the support of ADCB, Phil will be competing for the remainder of the UAE GT Championship. In his first day of driving the car, Phil managed to post a competitive qualifying time of 1:32.194 around the 3.56km National Circuit. This placed the car sixth in class, just behind the more experienced Cregan.
At the end of the hour-long race, Phil and Dave brought the car home in 9th place in GTC.
Speaking after the race, Dave said ‘Overall it was a slightly disappointing result for us, we were running well for the first few laps but after a spin on the third lap we found ourselves playing catch up after being passed by a number of cars on the track.’
Phil said, ‘Dave started the race as he has more experience with the car, I elected to drive after the mandatory pit stop and went on to post consistent times around the track, though found the last few laps to be a little challenging as the tyres were struggling for grip.
I brought the car home in one piece, which was my main goal from my first weekend! I’m extremely happy to have the support of Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, who have put their belief in me and the Maserati brand as a whole.’
The Maserati drivers will be hoping for more success in the next race of the Cytech UAE GT Championship which takes place at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi on Friday December 17th.
