Motorsport is littered with examples of unique ways to cross the finish line.Carl Edwards, after an enormous accident destroys his Rousch Fenway Ford on the run to the flag, took the chequered flag on foot at Talladega in 2009. Former-Formula One driver Christian Fittipaldi almost took the chequered flag upside down after a collision with his Minardi team-mate Pieluigi Martini at Monza in 1993. And let’s not forget Justin Wilson, who came close to putting his Lola Zytek into the pitwall just seconds after taking victory at the F3000 opener at Interlagos in 2001.

But in terms of drama, Mike Klensin takes the biscuit.

On the final stage of the King of the Hammers off-road event in California, Mike is about to cross the line to take ninth place. Trouble is Mike’s just hit the last jump slightly faster than he should have done.

The results are incredible. Having crossed the finish line on two wheels, the off-roader repeatedly flies end over end, bouncing – worryingly – towards the swarm of spectators nearby. The cameraman get’s a bit nervous too.

As most great gymnasts do though, Mike sticks his landing, the off-roader eventually coming back down on all four wheels, allowing Mike to drive away from a wildly applauding audience.

You may have seen this clip already, but crankandpiston hopes these exclusive images – courtesy of 4wheeloffroad – gets you closer to the action.
