If ever there was grapevine stirs to get crankandpiston’s own Phil McGovern dancing on his desk, it was rumours that powerhouse Cosworth was about to give both the Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ a kick in the tailpipe and inject some extra oomph under the engine bay. Continue your Macarena Mr McGovern, for a new video has confirmed performance upgrades for the FA20 engine platform that drives the 86, the BRZ and the Scion FR-S.

And Cosworth isn’t messing around here: this is much more than a simple “oh stick a few extra horsepower in to shut them up” exercise. The company plans to boost the current 197bhp to 325bhp, and eventually on to a track-ready 380bhp.

If Phil was worried his 86 might just be the death of him, he’ll be champing at the bit to try the new (and possibly improved) 86 rocketship. He won’t be the only one.
