Busy week for McLaren. Not only did Woking unveil the utterly awesome MP4-X concept Formula 1 car – one all McLaren fans hope will hope washes away memories of this year’s lacklustre MP4-30 – but the roadcar division also unveiled the new 675LT Spider. Limited to just 500 units worldwide, the Spider is just the second McLaren to boast the ‘LT’ name and comes less than a year since the hardtop 675 resurrected the name almost 20 years after the F1 ‘Longtail’.

Like the hardtop coupe, the Spider boasts the same heavily revised 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8, albeit with unchanged performance figures. Pushing out 666bhp and 516lb ft (700Nm) of torque, the 675LT Spider also hits the ton in an identical 2.9 seconds, 0-200kph in 8.1 seconds, and tops 326kph.

Cosmetic changes – aside from the retractable hardtop roof – are minimal, the Spider’s build like its counterpart dependent lightweight materials across the body and engine. Key design features though include exclusive Solis paintwork and 10-spoke Super-Lightweight forged alloys, a larger front splitter and end plates, and a ‘Longtail’ carbon brake Airbrake.

Performance meanwhile is dictated by McLaren’s carbon fibre MonoCell (which means the Spider weighs just 40kg more than the coupe) and P Zero Trofeo R tyres, while the interior receives carbon-fibre shelled racing seats and ‘675LT’ embossed leather upholstery.

The 675LT Spider is fifth production McLaren to be launched in 2015 following unveils of the P1 GTR, 570S Coupé, 540C Coupé and the 675LT Coupé (plus the limited edition ‘Can Am’ 650S). Prices are expected to be around the $432K mark.
