Just when we were wondering what could possibly top the Volkswagen Golf R…

Honda has announced that the next generation of the Civic Type-R will make its international debut at the upcoming Paris Motor Show, showcasing much more than just a luminous blue paint finish. The Japanese marque has even claimed that the new R will be not only the most dynamic model yet across a 22-year history, but will deliver performance unmatched by even the legendary NSX.

Unlike its naturally aspirated predecessors, the Type R’s 2.0 litre i-VTEC engine is turbocharged for improved low-end grunt. Though performance figures have yet to be released, said unit will produce ‘more than’ 280hp. The new powerplant will also be mated – hallelujah – to a six-speed manual gearbox.

Significant changes have been made to the suspension – including a new four-point Adaptive Damper System – to eliminate torque steer from the front-wheel drive hot hatch. More interesting than that however is the brand new ‘+R’ button located on the steering wheel, which heightens engine response and alters torque mapping for a more aggressive, performance-focused setup. These changes make the new Type R, according to Honda, ‘ideal for the track’.

We’ll settle for a Parisian show hall for now.
