Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG Coupe. Germany scores…again

It’s been some time since a monstrously powerful, stick-you-arse-first-into-a-lamppost AMG has been unveiled. Well, just a day after Germany won some kind of football tournament, Mercedes-Benz has unveiled this, the new S 65 AMG Coupe.

[Not a valid template]

As you’d expect, it’s all very clever and technical on the inside, the cribsheet boasting words and phrases like ‘curve titling’ and ‘magic body control’, mixed in with the spankiest leather upholstery. And on the outside, there’s a big snarling front grille, ‘V12 Biturbo’ badges on every conceivable panel, enormous 20-inch wheels and two fewer doors. None of which we’re interested in.

No, what we’ve made a beeline for is the 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 that kicks out 621bhp and 737lb ft of torque (that’s 1000Nm, by the way). Tradition dictates that we mention the 4.1 second 0-100kph time and the – predictable – 250kph electronically limited top speed, but let’s put that enormous lump of power into real world context: off the line, the new Mercedes coupe is a hair slower than the 565bhp 6.0-litre Aston Martin V12 Vantage S (4.1s to 3.9s) despite boasting 56bhp more. Now, given that the Aston V12 sets the heartiest of wallets back $231K(ish), how much do you imagine the asking price of the shoutiest of shouty AMG Coupes will be…?

Nope, you’re quite wrong. £183,065, or $313K give or take. And up against the 616bhp, 4.2sec, $215K Bentley Continental GT Speed, that rather beggars belief, doesn’t it…?
