Recently we brought you a post highlighting Xenatec’s attempts to build a hyper-exclusive Maybach coupe. This viable business venture proved anything but, and the production line was quickly binned.

Our interest piqued, we hit the Google playground searching for further Maybach-ian artistry. Our personal favourite is this Maybach Exelero concept model, showcased in 2005. A modern take on Maybach’s streamlined 1930s limousines, this particular model was built to aid Fulda Tyres test a new compound. Top speed was reputed to be in the 315kmh bracket. Impressive for a car that weighed nearly three tonnes.

Promises that this one-of-a-kind model would never be seen on the streets predictably ended with a sale. And a whopping one at that. Hip-hop star Bryan ‘Birdman’ Williams agreed on a near-$8 million closing price for the Exelero, though unfortunately timed financial problems meant final payments didn’t turn up.

Sometimes it just doesn’t pay to be a luxury car brand. Quite literally if you’re Maybach >>>
