If ever there were a godfather of Formula 1, it was Enzo Ferrari. So it’s perhaps fitting that Robert De Niro himself, star of the Godfather movies, is set to play the Commentadore in a new film.

De Niro told an Italian newspaper, Il Messaggero, that the movie was due to start shooting soon in Italy. The biopic will focus on Ferrari‘s life from the aftermath of World War II, when he began building the Ferrari company, to the end of his life in the 1980s. Ferrari died in 1988 at the age of 90.

“It is an honour to tell the life of an extraordinary man who revolutionised the world of motor sport. The film will go into production soon, mostly in Italy, and has absolute priority over all my other projects,” De Niro was quoted as saying.

The film is rumoured to be attracting some big names, with Clint Eastwood tipped to direct the script from Stephen J Rivele and Christopher Wilkinson, the writers of Nixon.

Motorsport has enjoyed a resurgence in movie popularity of late, particularly with the success of Senna and Rush.
