LEGO Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Here, take my wallet!

*NOW UPDATED WITH VIDEO* Why this new technic LEGO Porsche 911 GT3 RS – comprising 2074 pieces and with a $300 price tag – is a seriously cool piece of kit

I’d be lying if I said the new Panamera, even despite an admittedly cool teaser clip, is the latest Porsche we’re getting excited about. Nor even is it the new 718 Cayman or the Boxster we tried recently at Yas Marina. It’s actually this, the new LEGO (“really?”) 911 (“…well…”) GT3 RS (“oh awesome!”).

Now, we may as well get this out the way nice and early, the new GT3 RS Technic LEGO kit costs $300. That is quite a lot, yes, even if it is for a 1:18/proper scale model. Would that put us off buying one? Good God, no…

For starters, that gorgeous lava orange mini-Porsche comprises 2074 pieces, instructions for which – we’re not kidding – stretch to 578 pages. You’ll want to dedicate a couple of weeks to this build, plus some ‘alone time’ for weeping with frustration. If that’s not enough to convince you of the almost mind-rotting attention to detail that went into the build bear in mind the 911 GT3 RS LEGO kit was developed at the same time as the real one.

Look past the detailed dashboard, racing seats and glovebox that conceals a serial number though, and the best part of the LEGO Porsche 911 GT3 RS is undoubtedly the drivetrain. Because it actually works. Pistons in the six-cylinder engine actually move, the small steering wheel has paddle shifters, and the dual-clutch four-gear transmission really works. Can you just imagine the logistics that went into creating that: I can barely create a sandwich without throwing a hissy fit.

This is not even close to being the first LEGO model that’s tweaked our interest, but we’d be lying if we didn’t say it’s not the most intriguing we’ve seen yet. There’s even a teaser clip that’s borrowed thunder and lightning from pretty much every Lamborghini trailer that’s ever dropped.
