There’s one thing we’ve yet to bring you from the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The reason Goodwood is a testament to speed as well as style, and the event’s true test of every manufacturer’s latest creation. The hillclimb.
You didn’t honestly think our own Phil McGovern would miss the machines running up that hill like Placebo, did you?
It’s pretty early in the morning, and the crowds are already starting to filter into the grounds en-route to the viewing area next to the Central Feature, which this year celebrates 60 years of Lotus. Phil though is busy darting in the other direction, keen to take up his position at the starting line for a few hours of trainspotting.
He’s straight out of the box with the one-off Arash AF-10 LM, a two-seater ready for its debut blast. And ‘blast’ is truly the word. Not only does this alabaster beast house a 600hp 2.0l twin-turbocharged V6, it will rip rubber from alloy on its way to around 327kph, hitting 100kph from standstill in just 3.3s in the process. Tempted much? You may be disappointed then, since Arash has no plans to put the AF-10 LM into production.
Then there’s the RUF R Kompressor, a Porsche 997-based monster whose sole purpose is devastating pace and supreme handling. Thanks to its supercharged 3.8l flat-six engine, 460hp helps the nimble beast leap from standstill to 100kph in just 3.9s.
